CONduit 21: Caped CONduit Masquerade Guidelines

Every year, CONduit has one of the largest masquerades (or "costume and presentation") events in the Intermountain West. We have several award-winning people who help run it every year, as well.

  1. The purpose of the CONduit Masquerade is to show off wonderful costumes and to have fun.
  2. All costumes should be original, not commercially sold versions, and should not have been entered in a previous CONduit Masquerade. "Original" means that you can't go out and buy a complete costume and enter it in the Masquerade as your own work. Professional rentals are not allowed.
  3. Participants of all levels of expertise are welcome and encouraged to participate.
  4. This is a family-friendly event, so costumes should be kept to a PG rating.
  5. Participants who wish to compete in the Masquerade must attend the mandatory meeting Saturday. Check your pocket program for room and time.
  6. Competing participants should choose in which category they wish to compete. Participants can choose to compete at a more advanced level, but generally the category breakdowns are as follows:
    • The Rising Star category is open to those under the age of 16.
    • The Novice category is intended for those who have won fewer than three Novice-level awards and have not yet won a "Best in Show" award.
    • Once Novices win three Novice-level awards or one "Best in Show" award, they move on to the Journeyman category. They can compete in that category until they have won three Journeyman-level awards or a second "Best in Show" award.
    • After that, they must compete in the Master category.

  7. Participants who wish to have particular music accompanying their presentation should bring that music to the mandatory meeting on Saturday. The audio system may or may not accommodate MP3 formats. Audio CDs and cassette tapes are okay. Special lighting, on-stage microphones, or any other special instructions should be made at that time.
  8. Each Masquerade presentation should take 2 minutes or less to perform.  If your presentation goes over 2 minutes the sound will be cut.
  9. If a weapon, even a fake one, is part of your costume or presentation, you must get it approved by the CONduit Masquerade Director. Extra rehearsal time may be required.
  10. After your presentation, seats will be provided in the audience to watch the rest of the show.
  11. Judges are free to award, or not award, whichever awards they please.
  12. The Masquerade Director can make exception to these guidelines if circumstances require.

Any questions about the Masquerade or anything connected to it should be directed to the CONduit Masquerade Director. If you need help finding her, please inquire at the convention registration table. They will have her cell phone number.
